Declared a National Historic Monument, this magnificent engineering work was constructed in order to bring new energy to the mining industry (only possible by mule until this time), joining the former Chilecito Railway Station with the ¨La Mejicana¨ mine (Famatina hill at 4600 m altitude) in a journey that was the most extensive in its time: 34 kilometres over wild mountains, saving 3500 metres of change in altitude between the first and the last stations.
